Hello to everyone! My name is Mike and I'm from Ohio. I received some disheartening news yesterday and could use some advice. After deciding that I wanted to become a living kidney donor I decided on OSU hospital. I am a non direct donor and really just wanted to make a difference in someone's life. I started the process in early August and received the board approval in Nov. We originally were trying to do a chain donation but earlier this week we opted for a one on one. They scheduled me the OR for 12-30-16 and was in the process of pairing me up with someone. Now the bad news. While going over my charts my nurse saw a .9cm mass on my right adrenal gland. She ordered another CT which I did yesterday. I got the call last night that for now I am no longer being considered a donor and I need to see an endocrinologist. My heart hit the floor.

Well after being up half the night I'm ready to climb the mountain again. I'm a Marine so I don't give up very easily. Here's where I need the advice. I'm being told that if the endocrinologist says this mass is nothing and all is good then I can continue on. Is this true? How long does it take to get in to one of these specialists? Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome? Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you.

I wouldn't panic yet. This may cause a delay in your donation, but I bet not an end.
Small masses (and .9cm is very small!) are not particularly uncommon findings on CT scans. Since you are a donor, your health is the top priority and the hospital is acting with extra caution. The referral to an endocrinologist is to rule out any hormonal changes cause by secretions from the growth. If you don't have any issues, then you'll be ready to go again.
Call around and tell your story - you may find an endocrinologist who will see you soon.

If you donate your left kidney (which is the most common choice) the changes to the blood vessels may decrease the functioning of your left adrenal gland, so you should (I think) be very careful to be sure your right adrenal gland is is good condition.
