Title: OPTN Public Comment on New Proposals open today through Oct. 2

Take a look! Discuss your thoughts and comment strategies here! Of special interest:

Eliminate the use of DSA and Region in kidney allocation policy (https://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/governance/public-comment/eliminate-the-use-of-dsa-and-region-in-kidney-allocation-policy/)

Example of potential direct effect: "[/size]What priority do you think is appropriate for prior living donor candidates? Should prioritization be applied inside the distribution circle?"

Hi John,

Hope you are well.

The proposed change would also increase priority for pediatric patients and for prior living donors who now need a transplant. Aside from these changes, kidneys will still be matched with patients according to current criteria.

Is there any documentation on how many prior living donors have gone on to need a kidney (since they have been collecting data), how long they waited and outcomes. It has been discussed that  living donors earn an extra 4 points in the allocation system which puts them higher on the list. how does this effect that?

thanks,

sherri

I don't remember where I read it, but I recall a study that indicated that living donors' wait time for a transplant from a deceased donor was reduced by over a year on average. BUT the study noted that some living donors do NOT get credited with the extra points simple because their doctor neglected to provide that information when adding that patient to the waiting list. Sorry I don't have the contact information for the study.

I went to the Region 1 meeting yesterday and was TREMENDOUSLY encouraged by the tone and nature of discussions and the supportive votes cast. This is extraordinary progress on the way to continuous national sharing. The only unknown is whether HHS or the courts will allow either half measures or much more time.
