Houston gears up for 2014 Transplant Games

The Transplant Games of America is a biennial U.S. event to recognize accomplishments of people affected by eye, organ and tissue donation. Started 24 years ago, it brings together athletes, living donors and donor families to promote awareness of donation.

Teams from almost every state compete in a variety of activities. The 2012 Transplant Games of America held in Grand Rapids, Mich., included more than 1,300 athletes from 47 states.

Dr. Robert C. Robbins, president and CEO of Texas Medical Center, is honorary chairman of Houston's organizing committee for the games. He thanked Ryan for selecting Houston as the games 2014 site and the chance to celebrate the lives of participants, donors and their families.

"There is great life after receiving a transplant," Robbins said, adding that more than 100,000 people - about 10,000 in Texas - are waiting for organs.

He said more transplants have been performed in Houston than anywhere else. The games are a way to make more people aware of organ donation and the number of lives that transplants can save, Robbins said.
