Bulging Following Donation
« on: May 04, 2016, 03:34:59 PM »
After Donating a Kidney all was find until 4 years ago (it has been 14 since the transplant) when bulging, popping and pain started taking place on side of incision site - looking to date like an "alien" on my left side. Not only has information been limited and extremely concerning, the numerous doctors and specialists(to include the surgical team) that could never put an exact informational label on the condition and so  related it from scarring to a hernia and even a possible tumors. I have been put through multiple tests with a myriad of specialist(all negative) and the "bulge" merely has grown in size with the nausea and pain increasing. The latest physician had me put on a belly binder that aggravated the condition immensely. Though it seems not life threatening, it has impacted my daily activities and now older my quality of life.

I am proud to be a Kidney Donor and extremely happy the recipient has had a wonderful 14 years extended BUT it would be nice to
add this condition as one of the possible side effects for donors. Though it would never have changed my mind to give my organ, to move forward into some positive treatment and if there is anyone out there that can give specific directions and guidance it would be appreciated. In visiting other sites this condition does impact both donor and recipient.

I'm sorry to hear of your problem. I have had nothing like this (so far), and I likewise donated a kidney 14 years ago.
I would suggest that you also post this at the FaceBook page of Living Donors on Line, as many more donors check in there rather than here and you might get more advice. Some donors there even post photos of what their scars or bulges look like, it order to get comparisons and advice.
     best wishes,
       Fr. Pat
