A mother donates to her daughter. No surprise? It was 1979. They had to leave their country for the surgery, and for the medication their young daughter would need. That gift would serve for decades, but very shortly after LDO! was created in 2001, an amazingly empathetic and articulate voice cried out about the need, her need. Ten years ago, an LDO! reader responded to that need. Even that recently, such a connection was unusual and suspect. I miss Gabriela. How many more do we all miss, despite best efforts? Elba Ardenghi de Lacabe donated a kidney to her daughter, Gabriela, on June 26th, 1979. Gabriela survived until May 21st, 2014, dying from a condition unrelated to her transplant.
