Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: bergstromtori on August 25, 2011, 11:14:57 AM
Not to be rude, but what are all of your ages?  Most profiles do not have an age listed.  I figure we talk about EVERYTHING here and I am curious to compare recovery stories to ages.

Let me get the ball rolling...I am 36.

54 now, I was 50 when I donated and my husband at that time was 53.
Recovery was better than I anticipated (I had never been in a hospital nor had surgery before). Husband's recovery was probably better than mine. Upon waking up from anesthesia he said he felt like he had been shot out of a cannon! He got around that first week much better than I did!

My recovery was fine- I was sore, but I knew I would be. I am in shape and didn't take long to bounce back. But I've also birthed 4 children and that was my 3rd surgery within a year so I knew about my bouce-back-ability. :)

My recipient was in a different state and I didn't know him at the time.  He was down to 101 pounds and wheelchair bound for 6 months prior to surgery, he was very close to "not making it". He felt better immediately after the transplant, other than the huge OUCH from surgery, and has continued to grow stronger since. He's gained 40 pounds back and enjoys eating again. :)

59 1/2 and my niece recipient was 37 this past March.  Now 60.  This was her second transplant and she was doing better a lot sooner, even though that kidney was one marker closer than mine.  Guess mine is just a happier kidney after being rehomed than the first one, haha

My Husband was 41 at the time of the transplant and is 43 now.

29, I really think my age played a major role in my lack of pain and quick recovery.

46 year old female and I donated when I was 42.  I'm small and dropped to a 93 degree body temp in surgery...plus I can't take pain meds without getting nauseous so I spent an extra day in the hospital.  Once I got home, things went fairly well.  First two weeks were rough but I was traveling with work after 3 weeks, feeling about normal at 6 weeks and water skiing by 8 weeks.  My recovery was fairly good all around.

Tori,

I was 50 and donated to a 24 year old man, October 2010.  This August, my kidney was removed from him due to a massive infection, but not organ rejection.  My recipient is back on dialysis and awaiting another donor or cadaver kidney.  I pray for him daily.  Me, I bounced back great physically and am in the best shape of my life now.

famoran,

Congratulations on your 1 month + 1 day anniversary!   ;)

I went back & read your first post.  DOUBLE-WWOOWW!!   :D  107 lb. weight loss!!  And your happiness on being told you were a match with your husband, that "I was so happy I almost passed out!"  YES!  Many of us had a similar feeling -- my feeling was of ELATION!! -- when we/I were told that we/I, finally, after all the testing, were accepted as a donor.

I/we wish you & your hubby and family many long years of happiness.   :)

Bill

I'm 59 now, male, and was 56 when I donated to my brother.  He was 62 at the time.   He's doing well.  Had a creatin scare last week, it had jumped to 2.8 and they were talking about doing a biopsy.  When he went in  for a testing it was at 2.1 so they  cancelled the biopsy.  In general he's doing excellent as am I.  We golfed Sunday.  I can still beat him.  LOL.

The last blood  pressure check I had  read 110/70.  Quite happy about that.

Largest challenge has been the development of arthritis in one  of the finger joints.  Pain med options are limited.  Will keep  working on the Qui to deal with it.

Cheers

Apparently, age didn't matter too much.  I had a really tough recovery on the second day.  I couldn't imagine ever feeling better again.  However, now I feel pretty good.  I am glad they had me stay in the hospital until today.

I am 26, I donated on May 10th of this year to my sister who was 23 at the time (she's 24 now).  I'd say I was in pretty immediate pain for about 4 weeks, with the first week being the worst.  For the following 5 weeks, I had pain that was a lot more mild, but still there.  At about the 9 - 10 week mark, I noticed I really had no pain at all (aside from a lingering sensitivity on the right side of my abdomen when it's touched in certain ways, this sensitivity actually even remains today ..? *I'm trying to be patient*).
After about 3 months, I noticed my energy levels were much improved.  Now at the 4 month mark, I'd say I feel about 95% better in terms of energy.
My healing process may have taken a little longer than most people though (especially considering my age), but I did develop an infection around my main incision about two weeks following the surgery, and then I developed an allergy to the antibiotic that was given to me (it was quite the roller coaster to be on!).

It is only been a week and a half and I feel about 90% of normal, which I think is pretty good.  Today the plastic surgeon took out the JP drains and I got to see my new belly button for the first time.
