Title: protien shakes/higher creatinine
Post by: pilotjjc3 on August 03, 2012, 03:32:51 PM
I just had my two year blood test and my creatinine came back slightly high.  I think I was 1.3 and the upper limit was 1.2.  My PCP asked if I was doing anything different and I said I had been taking protien shakes after workouts.  He said that the numbers would be high because the extra protien was passing through my system and he wasn't concerned about it at all other than to do yearly checks to make sure it isn't excessively high.  I talked to the kidney doctors before I started this and they said about 3 protien shakes a week wouldn't be a problem, but they didn't say anything about the creatinine levels increasing.  Anyone else here that takes protien shakes see their creatinine levels rise?

I wasn't given much advice for taking care of myself post-donation, but one thing the transplant team did say was no high-protein diets from now on.

One problem you face is what is "normal" for a healthy person who has donated a kidney. Some believe that a 1.3 or 1.4 might be the "new normal" after donation. It has also been noted that the numbers may not settle down to your "normal" until a year or more after donation. Some primary care doctors have dealt with kidney donors before, while others have not. But do please keep an eye on the numbers. In my own case 1.3 or 1.4 did not alarm my doctors, and eventually it went down to 1.2, which my present doctor considerrs fine for a one-kidney person.
