Title: Hit a bump on the donation highway.
Post by: Nancy on March 06, 2013, 07:50:40 AM
I am trying to donate to my friend who found out she had total kidney failure 3 days after Thanksgiving and has been on dialysis ever since.  She went for her evaluation Monday and found out there is something 'off' with her heart.  We thought she was just weeks away from a transplant.  Now she is set for a heart cath. on Friday.  DUMMER!  Hoping it turns out to be nothing or something easily corrected on the spot.

It always seems like there are slight bumps with various fits and starts along the way, doesn't it?

While it is frustrating, take comfort in knowing that they have your friend's best interests at heart(no pun intended!) in checking her out to be sure that everything is in order so she can successfully survive the operation. My sister-in-law had a transplant well before us, and it seemed like they were constantly checking out the strength of her heart.  My husband had no heart issues or problems whatsoever, yet they insisted that he had to have the heart stress test as part of his evaluation for transplant. They told us that, during the operation, the patient gets larger than normal amounts of fluid which is hard on the heart. They wanted to be sure his heart was healthy enough to manage that stress.

Hope everything turns out well on Friday for your friend and that you both will be on your way soon!

Dear Nancy,

My Dad had a heart transplant ten years before his kidney transplant and everything went great.

Update,
The cardiologist said my friend's heart was 'pristine'.  They told  her husband 92% of stress tests had correct readings but that she had been one of the 8 in 100 who's test showed false results.  SO - we are back on track - YEAH.  Her case will go before the transplant board next Friday.  Would have been this Friday but she was having the procedure and awaiting results when they met this week.

Glad you got good news.  My mom and I both had extra heart tests at the end of the process before to being approved for our paired exchange. I love that they are cautious but it was frustrating.   Then again, nothing in this process has been fast.  If you were not patient before you will be after this process.
