Title: Does LOD have waiting period?
Post by: sister14 on October 10, 2012, 03:18:45 PM
I'm sorry I am new to this forum and not sure how to navigate.  I have browsed around but can't seem to find the answer to my question.  If someone is willing to do a LOD do they have a waiting period if the recepient is an alcoholic in end stage LD?

Dear "Sister14",
Perhaps you could explain what "end stage LD" is? Also, are you talking about kidney donation or liver donation?
To go through with a living organ donation (since it always invovles some risk for the living donor) the Doctors have to be reasonable confident that there is a good chance of a successful transplant, and reasonably sure that the recipient will faithfully follow all the follow-up requirements to protect the donated organ. That means faithfully taking the anti-ejection medication daily for years, getting regular check-ups, taking good care of diet and exercise, not  using excessive alcohol, etc. If there is some doubt about whther the intended recipient will take good care of the donated organ, the hospital may establish a waiting period in which he/she has to show the willingness and ability to make those life-style changes.
I hope this info is of help. You should be able to get more information on this from the "transplant coordinator" at the intended recipient's hospital.
      best wishes,
         Fr. Pat
