Letter: Decision to be a living organ donor is a rewarding way to give to others

In life, we are presented with opportunities to make a decision that can benefit another person but will disrupt our lives. It isn't always convenient and will impact those closest to us. Decisions like this need to be discussed with those who support us.
Opportunities can come at an inconvenient time, but we feel a need to be involved and can't walk away.
For me, the unsuspected opportunity started with a message on Facebook: "I have been on the organ transplant list for three years. The waiting is taking a toll. We are looking for a kidney donor."I paused and reread the message. I couldn't be the person who "hoped" someone else would step forward. If you know me personally, it isn't my style. If I could help, I would help.A blood draw, an arsenal of education, a two-day evaluation, a three-hour surgery, a five-week recovery and my decision to be a living kidney donor have helped restore the health of a friend. This has been one of the greatest life decisions I have made.Your health is your wealth, and who doesn't want to be healthy? If you have an opportunity to assist in someone's health, take the opportunity to decide what role you can play. Everyone has something to give, and this includes living organ donation.
