New policy requirements for living donor informed consent and evaluations

New policies for informed consent and medical evaluation of living donors take effect in February, after OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors approved them in November.
Similar policies are currently in effect for living kidney transplantation, the most common form of living organ donation. The new policies address commonalities for living donation of kidney, liver, lung, intestine and pancreas, and they add criteria for living kidney and liver donors.
An instructional pathway and pre-recorded program will be available mid-January 2015 to address these new requirements. Upon completion of the learning pathway and instructional program, participants will be able to:
Describe the requirements for informed consent for living donors.
Explain the requirements for psychosocial and medical evaluation for living donors.
Apply the pertinent policies to their processes and everyday work.
Locate professional resources to assist with policy compliance.
Contact education@unos.org with questions.
