Here's the San Francisco Chronicle link to the local part of the story.

Why do the articles always say the donor and recipient have to be the same blood type?  I fear it prevents people from testing.

We looked into abo incompatible transplants at Johns Hopkins. I am not sure the criteria, but my husband was not a candidate for his incompatible mother to donate.
Bridge Paired Exchange donor on behalf of my husband (re-transplant) at Johns Hopkins.
