Nominees Chosen for Board of Directors Election

Transplant recipient, living donor are nominees for Vice President/President-Elect.

At its November meeting, the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors approved a following slate of nominees for Board appointments beginning in June 2014. The OPTN Board of Directors also functions as the UNOS Board of Directors.

For the first time, neither of the two nominees for Vice President/President-Elect is a transplant surgeon, transplant physician or executive director of an organ procurement organization. James Gleason is a heart transplant recipient and the husband of a donor mother; Betsy Walsh, J.D., M.P.H., is a living kidney donor. Both have served on the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors and on multiple committees.

"In these nominations for vice president, we want to recognize the leadership role of people who have personal experience with donation and transplantation," said Kenneth Andreoni, M.D., OPTN/UNOS President and chair of the Nominating Committee. "Transplant candidates and recipients, living donors and members of donor families are all represented on our Board and committees, and they have a lifelong investment in the services we provide."

OPTN/UNOS member voting representatives will receive a ballot and biographical information for the nominees in January or February (specific date to be determined).
