Liver heroes: Non-related donors
By Salma Khalik

The National University Hospital (NUH) did a record six liver transplants involving non-related donors and recipients last year, up from just one in 2013. So far this year, there has already been one such transplant.
All cleared the national ethics committee, even though one donor was from Malaysia and the recipient was local, and three donors did not know the recipients.
Singapore has laws against the sale of organs and so is careful to ensure that donors are truly altruistic when they offer more than half their liver to save someone else. Liver donation is also riskier than donating a kidney.
