Incorrect OPTN caption slights living donors' contribution!
« on: March 19, 2016, 04:30:58 PM »

In a letter I sent to the CEO of UNOS and the President of the boards of the OPTN and UNOS, I said:

On the splash page for the OPTN, https://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/, much well deserved joy is expressed at reaching more than 30,000 transplants in 2015. Bravo! Unfortunately, farther down the page is a graph titled, "The need continues to grow," with only deceased donors cited as ameliorating this need, with no mention of living donors.

There is a link to "Graph description of Need continues to grow," https://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/need-continues-to-grow/, which compounds this error by providing a total number of donors, not just deceased donors, as in the graph, or an explicit mention of living donors, we who have outnumbered deceased donors in some years, and who have typically been more than 1/3 of the total number of donors year after year.

I append relevant data pulled from the OPTN data tool in pdf. I urge revision of the graphic and the description ASAP. (Excel available for anyone who requests it.)
Unrelated directed kidney donor in 2003, recipient and I both well.
620 time blood and platelet donor since 1976 and still giving!
Elected to the OPTN/UNOS Boards of Directors & Executive, Kidney Transplantation, and Ad Hoc Public Solicitation of Organ Donors Committees, 2005-2011
Proud grandpa!
