Year end already? How can it be? They seem to fly by faster and faster. I'm not the first to ponder the flight of time, but I believe I do it in better company than anyone in human existence ever has. Y'all are the best, people.  Ten years ago this month, I spoke on behalf of current era living donors, following Ron Herrick, the first of us, at the commemoration of his donation at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. Best wishes for healing, health, and joy this year, and in all the years to come.

Sixty years:
Ronald Herrick donated a kidney to his brother on December 23rd, 1954, the first successful solid organ transplant. Ron died at age 79 on December 27th, 2010.

Twenty-ninth anniversary:
Robert A. Hancox donated a kidney to his sister on December 11th, 1985

Twenty-third anniversary:
Juanita DeVeaux donated a kidney to her daughter on December 4th, 1991

Twentieth anniversary:
Natalie Cardoza donated a kidney to her sister on December 21st, 1994

Nineteenth anniversary:
Emmitt Lee Lewis donated a kidney to his little brother, Glen, on December 8th, 1995. Emmitt's daughter, Deborah Lewis-Grimes, says they were the first African-American living donor-recipient siblings in the US.
Sheila Leander donated a kidney to her husband, Brian, on December 27th, 1995

Fifteenth anniversary:
Heather Roberts donated a kidney to her father in December, 1999. He died in 2012, with kidney function still good.
Cheryl McCullough donated part of her liver to her husband on December 14th, 1999

Thirteenth anniversary:
Phillip Ondler donated a kidney to his sister on December 14th, 2001
Bob Jauch donated part on his liver to his daughter on December 20th, 2001
Janice O'Connell donated a kidney to friend on December 26th, 2001

Twelfth anniversary:
Bill Shummel donated a kidney anonymously on December 17th, 2002

Eleventh anniversary:
Micheline donated a kidney to a friend on December 5th, 2003
Kevin donated part of his liver to his father on December 8th, 2003
Barbara Sher Cohen donated a kidney to her brother on December 9th, 2003

Kathryn Jones donated part of her liver to a friend on December 18th, 2003. Her friend died two months later.

In grafting skin or body organs from one human being to another, the best that surgeons can hope for with their present skills is a temporary "take." After a while, the recipient's system develops antibodies against the transplant and it withers away.* A transplanted kidney may serve as a crutch until the patient's own kidneys can recover, as apparently happened in the famed case of Chicago's Mrs. Howard Tucker (TIME, June 11, 1951). But last week Boston surgeons had the chance of a lifetime: to transplant a kidney to the donor's identical twin brother, with every hope of lasting success.

Surgeons at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital gave a glowing progress report on the first human being to receive a successfully transplanted kidney: Richard Herrick, 24, who got one from his identical twin Ronald (TIME, Jan. 3 and Feb. 7), has gained 25 Ibs., his blood pressure is down, his enlarged heart is back to normal size, and he is carrying on "unlimited activity." Ronald is doing fine, too.
