"Listen to the mockingbird, listen to the mockingbird" goes the American Civil War era song lyric, singing lightly of remembered joy despite current sorrow. We've got mockingbirds courting all around us all night long, singly loudly of their current hopes and driving us, and our cats, to distraction. Maybe I'm reaching, but there are so many resonances with the hopes, fears, anxieties, wakefulness, and joy I recall experiencing on my path to donation. May 6th, 2003, I believed I and my extended family would all meet and talk with my surgeon the next week, with surgery scheduled for the day after. Late on the afternoon of May 7th, I got a call that my recipient's condition had suddenly worsened, and that two operating rooms were available first thing next morning. If I could come in immediately for pre-op testing, the surgical teams would be assembled. I did, they did, and we did, at the crack of dawn on May 8th. My mother made it to the hospital just as I was coming out of surgery. Apologies to those with anniversaries on the first five days of May! We celebrate you, too!
