Day 6 post surg
« on: December 21, 2011, 09:56:44 AM »
It's been 6 days since I donated. I am tired still crampy feels like period cramps that go around my back n have no appetite or desire to drink. I threw up last night, it was my first day home.
I am worried since I am not eating and drinking a lot.
Is all this normal?

Thanks
Lisa

Lisa...you need to drink drink drink and keep that kidney well hydrated.   You should have been on clear liquids the day after surgery, then advanced to a regular diet as you passed gas and your bowels started to work again.  Call your doctor and get checked out.

Hi Lisa,

Not sure if you are still taking anything but could pain meds be nauseating you? Once I switched from Vicodin to Extra Strength Tylenol my stomach began to settle and the Tylenol was enough to cover most of the discomfort I was feeling.  The rest of my GI system got on board within a couple of days too. Good idea to report anything unusual to your doctor / transplant coordinator of course.

Feel better!

Dear Lisa,
Definitely KEEP DRINKING enough, even if you don't feel like it. Fruit juices, soups, etc. can give you some nourishment along with the fluids. If you have no appetite, keep stuff nearby that you might like and nibble and sip whenever you can. Even a bite or this or that, a few spoons of yogurt, whatever, all adds up. You have been through a major surgery, so make sure you keep well hydrated and nourished so you can heal. Don't worry about wasting food for now. Better to have one bite of a sandwhich and dump the rest than not eat at all. Get your favorite ice cream, even if you only feel like a spoonful or two.

Great advice, Fr. Pat. And remember, it was major surgery, so of course it's normal to not feel well yet. Hang in there. You should start feeling a tiny bit better every day.

Ditto what everyone else has said.

Hydration is the key. I like the ice cream idea too!

Are you trying to walk a little dear?   Could be gas that trying to escape your body and causing your back pain.

Sending healing prayers and thoughts your way Lisa!

It takes everyone's body some time to recover from the trauma of the surgery.  I had similar symptoms, on-and-off, for several days but I really agree with the HYDRATE as much as you can.  Praying for your healing my friend.
