The harvest of convicted cop killer Eric Knysz’s organs could begin today after tests Revealed Tuesday that he was clinically dead and only being kept alive by a ventilator. Since then doctors have been testing for compatibility and infectious diseases and lining up recipients for the seven organs that appear to be viable.
Knysz had apparently expressed his wish that his organs be donated some time ago, but probably never dreamed it would happen under these circumstances. He tried to hang himself earlier this week after he was sentenced last week for the murder of State Trooper Paul Butterfield during a traffic stop in Mason County last September.
So…..would you be willing to get an organ from Eric Knysz? To see through the corneas of a killer, or have his heart transplanted into your chest? Surveys were conducted just last year by University of Michigan researcher Susan Gelman and others, who asked respondents in the U.S. and in India how they would feel about getting a transplant from someone who was quite different. In fact about half were afraid that they would be affected whether they got a new liver or just a pint of blood. Doctors say personalities don’t transfer, but HIV, Hepatitis and other diseases can, and that’s what they test for. Of course a survey of folks on the waiting list for a new organ might turn out quite differently. Every 90-minutes someone dies waiting.
