Transplant surgeon donates his own kidney to save mum's life
by Lachlan Mackinnon

A TRANSPLANT surgeon saved his seriously ill mother's life – by donating a kidney.

Asim Syed stepped forward when Dilshad, 64, started to have complications after years of dialysis.

But as they were not a match, Asim, 32, offered a kidney through pooled donation. Another patient got his organ, while his mum was paired with another donor.

Asim said: "Pooled donation was the only way of guaranteeing mum could get a transplant quickly."

Dilshad is recovering in Doncaster after the op at Asim's workplace, Hammersmith Hospital, in West London. Asim was operated on by his boss, Professor Nadey Hakim, who said: "He sets a tremendous example".
