Transplants: new Italy-Spain-France organ network

The organ transplant agencies of Italy, France, and Spain on Monday signed a cooperation protocol called the South Transplant Alliance (STA).

It will create a network between the three countries, in which 50% of European post mortem organ donations are made. The STA, to be guided by Italy in the first three years, comes in response to EU directives calling for countries to link up, share networks, uniform their rules and procedures, and give all European citizens equal chances of receiving a transplant.

STA activities will implement the so-called cross-over kidney donation program, faciliate international donations, promote the concept of becoming an organ donor, and audit organ donation centers.

The STA will also cooperate with developing countries within the Mediterranean Transplant Network and the Council of Europe.

The aim is to widen the network to include the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Balkan peninsula.
