Editorial: Living Kidney Donor Profile Index: Utility and Limitations

Many studies have illustrated numerous characteristics of donor kidneys which have strong
influence on kidney transplant recipient outcomes. The aggregate risk associated with deceased
donor kidneys based on available national registry data has been quantified as the Kidney Donor Risk Index (KDRI) which is now directly incorporated into donor allocation policy (1). In the current study, Massie et al conducted a study aimed at quantifying the risk associated with living kidney donors and constructed a Living Kidney Donor Profile Index (LKDPI) (2). The analysis is based on over 36,000 living donor transplants in the United States with rigorous statistical analyses which provides interesting insights concerning risk factors contributing to living donor recipient outcomes. The study also includes interesting comparisons with deceased donor kidneys and discusses potential applications to clinical practice.
