National Kidney Registry to Provide Donor Insurance and Track Donor Outcomes through The Living Organ Donor Network

The American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation, http://www.amfdt.org/lodn_info.aspx, is pleased to announce that The National Kidney Registry will provide donor insurance and post donation follow-up through the Living Organ Donor Network. “It is great that National Kidney Registry is joining LODN”, said Dr. Francis Wright, a Transplant Surgeon and President of AFDT, “Participating in LODN provides another level of security for donors and their families that goes above and beyond what is normally available for donors”.

“We are thrilled to be working with The American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation”, said Garet Hil, President & Founder of the National Kidney Registry. “Working with LODN to provide insurance protection and improved follow-up for our Good Samaritan donors is just the right thing to do for those who so generously start ‘Donor Chains’ and give the gift of life to people facing kidney failure. We hope this partnership will inspire more transplant centers around the country to participate in LODN and provide this critical insurance coverage and donor follow-up service.”

The Good Samaritan donors that start NKR chains will be followed by the Living Organ Donor Network to ensure they are recuperating quickly and completely.  LODN will follow donors in the event there is a post donation concern, ensure care is given and coordinate with the donation center so donors are not required to pay for any complications.  Information gathered through LODN donor follow-up will comply with UNOS requirements and will assist the NKR participating centers in meeting regulatory requirements for data reporting.

Donors will also be eligible for the life insurance policy that covers them from the time they leave their house to travel to the donation center and remains in effect for up to a year after any post donation complications. In addition, donors will be covered by disability and medical-care ‘gap’ insurance.

The National Kidney Registry is a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to save and improve the lives of people facing kidney failure by increasing the quality, speed, and number of living donor transplants in the world. The National Kidney Registry has facilitated more paired exchange transplants than any organization in the world. To receive information on the National Kidney Registry call 800-936-1627 or go to

www.kidneyregistry.org.

The Living Organ Donor Network has been providing insurance and follow-up of kidney donors since 2000.  LODN has been recognized by UNOS as ‘Best Practice’ in kidney donor follow-up.  THE ASTS recognizes LODN as the only program in the U.S. that complies with the Declaration of Istanbul on care of the living organ donor.  Any transplant center in the U.S. can participate in LODN by contacting AFDT at

www.amfdt.org or by calling 1-800-kidney9.
