I had two very healthy kidneys and my dearest friend in life unfortunately did not. I went through years of watching her suffer. It gave me so much satisfaction to be able to give her something I was blessed with and still live a perfectly normal life. I went on to have three beautiful healthy children! My life at 43 years old with 3 young children has not changed at all...except the fact that I saved a young woman's life. There is no better feeling I could ever explain than that! |

Although my surgery and recovery were not problematic, I believe those who donate and it does reject have a special need to meet others who have had this happen. There are not many of us. Donating to a child, then having the kidney reject presents its own set of emotions. I would like to be able to help anyone else who is in the same situation. |

I'd like to offer the same kind of resource to other potential donors. I am married, no children, but two dogs. My husband and I are in our 40s and very active. We do triathlons (swimming, biking, running), as well as hiking and just enjoying life. Since my donation, I have already started resuming these types of activities. Location: Gallatin, TN Donation Date: 10/01/2019 Donated To: Best friend's husband (Adult) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: Vanderbilt Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Mostly positive Donor Story: I wish I would've had a buddy when I went through the donation process and then surgery. I think this is an amazing thing. I would love to support someone and offer any encouragement to someone wanting to be a donor or getting ready for the surgery, etc. My process through everything wasn't "picture perfect" either. I had to stay an extra day because of dehydration and pain. My pain still comes and goes because of inflammation/scar tissue. All that to say, I would love the opportunity to help anyone who has questions, feelings, or just needs someone to vent to that's also removed from their circle. I'm compassionate, kind, and I just love to love on others. I'm a nurse too so helping others is my career and my passion! |

Buddy K0213
Location: Baltimore, MD Donation Date: November 12, 2007 Donated To: Brother (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Johns Hopkins Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Partially positive and partially negative, or neutral Donor Story: As a health care provider I understand the importance of educating oneself about any medical procedure, especially elective surgery. I would like to help other potential donors learn how to advocate for themselves and make educated and informed decisions. My surgery, as well as my recipient's was very successful. Neither one of us had any complications and we were both able to resume our normal activities. For me the decision to donate was difficult. I know a lot of people, especially family members, are anxious to help their loved one. But there are those of us who are ambivalent and have a difficult time making that commitment because of the high stakes. I would hope to let potential donors know that everyone's experience is different. Whether they decide that living donation is the right choice for them or not, having someone who has been through it and just holding your hand along the way can make a difference. |

Location: Castle Rock, WA Donation Date: October 20, 2010 Donated To: Non-directed (Child) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: University of Wash. Medical Center Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: My journey of donation was the most incredible journey I have ever taken and I would do it again in a heart beat, that said - I know that during my journey there wasn't anyone that I could really talk to about my feelings - sure I was able to share them with others but it was obvious they were not connecting, at least not on the same level. I really think Living Donors need one another to ask questions and share thoughts and feelings - good or not so good (I'm grateful that I didn't have any of the not so good ones). I look forward to being a Living Donor Buddy . . . . For me - being a Living Donor was being a part of someone's prayers being answered - Does life really get any better than that? |

My donation set off a domino effect where four people received kidneys. I was the first of my kind at UK hospital. I got to meet everyone in my group, except my recipient and his wife. I didn't have anyone to talk to about my experiences. I did find help with an online support group for Living Kidney Donors.
I volunteer with Lift Gift now and try to raise awareness for the importance of organ donation. Living donors still are a small group and undergo unique challenges and stress during the evaluation process.
My experience has been 100% positive and while this is not always the case, I feel I understand the complications and the emotions other potential donors experience during the evaluation and donor process. |

I did not discover this board until late in the process. I found that all the emotions and other issues I experienced were fairly common among donors. My anxiety and fears were more from not knowing what to expect. I would like to use my experience and motivation to help another person so that they do not go through that same scenario of feeling alone in the process. |

Location: Ottawa, Ontario CanadaDonation Date: September 17, 2015 Donated To: Anonymous donation (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Ottawa Hospital (general campus) Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I suppose I would be of most help to someone contemplating non-directed kidney donation. I think in some ways, it is a bit more challenging to go through the process or, at the very least, more lonely. People in general have a harder time understanding and accepting the motivation for an anonymous donation. Even the medical personnel seem to scrutinize anonymous donors more. I think I can help answer questions that someone might have and maybe echo some of the feelings and emotions that come with the prospect of anonymous donation. The mere fact of contemplating giving a life saving organ is a wonderful gesture and something that can be tremendously life affirming and positive, but it can also be challenging. If I can help someone in some fashion through their own process towards donation, then I am happy to do so. |

My mother was the first to donate to my father, 16 years ago. My memories of that experience were nothing but positive, so when it was looking like the time was coming that he would need another transplant, I took the steps required to see if I could donate to him. I tell everyone that walking through this trial with him was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. It is the chance to do something so much greater than ourselves! 8 months out and nothing in my life is any different than before surgery. |

Though the surgery went well and the recipient has flourished with the transplanted kidney, there haven't not been bumps along the way. To have that support and knowledge of like-minded individuals is critical to the success of the donor. So much of donor success is focused on the short-term and there is so much more at stake, and 1 or 2 years down the road. Location: East Brunswick, NJ Donation Date: 5/28/2019 Donated To: Brother (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: RWJ Barnabas New Brunswick NJ Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: The donation journey is such an emotional and soul searching experience. I spoke to experts, did my research, talked to other donors and knew that I was put on this earth to save my brother's life. If I had another kidney to spare I would do it again! My brother spent 3 years dying on dialysis - albeit it kept him alive but it was grueling on him and his body. He wanted to wait for a deceased donor and did not want to take my kidney. That waiting took its toll on him physically and emotionally. He experienced the ups and downs of being called for a kidney only to be disappointed that it was not viable. I started the testing process and found out I was healthy and a match! Convincing him to take my kidney was the next hurdle. I told him that by taking my kidney he was freeing up a kidney for someone on the transplant list that did not have a person willing to donate to them. He would be saving a life too! The transplant was a success and my brother's quality of life has improved dramatically! It's been such a positive experience raising awareness for kidney donation! Share your spare has become my mantra! |

I got tested and was a match but he still resisted taking my kidney. I presented it to him this way; not everyone is blessed enough to have a match from a living donor and the success rate is greater from a sibling. I explained by taking my kidney and coming off the transplant list he would not only be saving his own life but the life of someone else on the transplant list by moving them up. He finally agreed and we are both doing great and living healthy lives. Donating my kidney was the most important thing I've done in my life and I want to spread the word on donation and the positive life changing experience it has had on my life and my brother's life. |

Since donating a kidney I have felt that I need to continue to talk about how beneficial organ donation can be and encourage other people to consider this gift of life. At the same time it wasn't an easy or pain free process so I can let people know that it isn't an easy decision that should be rushed into at all. Location: Concord Township, OH Donation Date: April 21, 2015 Donated To: For husband but part of a swap (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Cleveland Clinic Type of Surgery: Open nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I had a positive experience. I did a lot of research and had many extenuating circumstances and life complications to balance during the process. Some of those complications: mother of school age children, going in for surgery at the same time as my husband, used NKR for a swap as we didn't match each other, was first rejected and then accepted as a donor - required additional tests, was unable to control the schedule due to the swap schedule, transplant took place in Ohio while we still lived in Atlanta so life management was complicated. All these experiences give me insight to many things to consider and manage as part of decision making and pre/post surgical life. I know how much it helped me to talk to two previous donors as I prepared and decided my path. |

Location: Lombard, IL Donation Date: 1/17/2019 Donated To: Unrelated - friend (Adult) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: Loyola Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Mostly positive Donor Story: I would like to explain that I would never regret my decision to donate to my friend and co-worker. What are the chances that two people who worked together for 13 years and sit next to each other would be a match?
I would also explain that it takes some work - testing, 24 hour urine collection, lab tests, EKG, kidney function, stress test and may require more than a few visits to the facility.
I found that the transplant team was very knowledgeable and the patient advocate made sure that I knew if I wanted to stop the process anytime I could.
The thing I did not think of was the emotional toll - since it was a friend and co-worker everyone knew at work & it was hard to know what to say when people said - that is selfless and you are incredible? How do you respond? I just said thanks.
My last thing to share is that you need to have support when you get home - my sister stayed for 2 weeks. Keep the number to the transplant on call center handy and ask any questions - about meds, how you should feel, what you can expect. They give you instructions at the hospital but you are out of it & not comprehending. So just remember that there is a number to call.
Please let me know if I can help someone else. Not through this program but through a friend of a friend I talked to someone in September 2018 and she was very helpful as she had just donated to someone that June that she did not know. She was glad to help and made her feel she experienced this all over again. Learning more information is so helpful.
Sorry for my long reply! Take care, Mary Ann |

Some of the people I met here were absolutely instrumental in my decision to donate. It was so reassuring to speak with people who told of their experiences (both good and bad) honestly. I learned so much about donation, kidney function, immune system functions, and the emotional journey that donation becomes. I still refer people to LDO when they are considering donation, and because of the things I learned and the genuine people that I met, I would love to be able to help another person make the most informed decision possible - that is right for them. I had a wonderful experience donating (my recipient has only had 2 rejection episodes which were managed with medication changes) so I hope to be a positive voice for someone in an otherwise overwhelming situation. I hope that I can help potential donors make the decision that is right for them - even if it means not donating. Location: Cambridge, MA Donation Date: May 8, 2003 Donated To: Unrelated (friend) (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Mostly positive Donor Story: I had the luxury of a long lead time prior to my donation to benefit a friend, during which I conducted a literature review of the published journal articles available at that time about hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy, surgical complications, and donor post-op survival and quality of life. I also had less than universal initial approval for my decision from family, friends, and colleagues, which led to many conversations. I decided to donate, but found that decision hard to make, and strongly challenged. I'd be happy to discuss this with any prospective donors that feel it might help them make up their own minds, or just to answer questions about my own direct surgical experience. |

Location: Loves Park, IL Donation Date: June 26, 2008 Donated To: Father (Adult) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: UW Madison, WI Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Mostly positive Donor Story: My father was diagnosed with PKD in 1999 and we were aware of his need for a transplant in 2003 and during the process of ensuring he was healthy to receive a transplant, they found cancer. We had to wait for him to be 5 years cancer free before a transplant could take place and in the meantime, he was placed on dialysis. I had 5 years to prepare myself to be his donor. Although I never had a second thought on donating, my father was initially hesitant on receiving my kidney. I am very detail oriented and wanted to know as much information as possible about being a living donor. I researched a lot of things online, found a mentor via this same website, and asked a lot of questions. I met several other living donors through acquaintances. One of those being a co-worker who donated to his nephew only 1 month before me. I look forward to sharing my experience with anyone who is interested or considering being a living donor. |

I am very well researched. Having studied genetics and biology in college, I understand the technical aspects much more than the average person and have explained it to many so have determined the best way to communicate some of the complex concepts involved. I had a very positive experience and I am generally a very positive person. |

Location: Rochester Hills, Michigan Donation Date: September 6, 2018 Donated To: Sister (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Mayo Clinic/ Rochester Minnesota Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I donated in another state to a family member that didn't live there either. I learned about resources to help prepare for the eventual donation but also the journey to get there and how to adapt and handle any bumps along the road to get there.
I had to lose weight (60 pounds so far) retake a couple of tests as well and handle a major curve ball (possible prostate cancer) along the way. I had to take a few steps before I could be scheduled for in-depth evaluation such as colonoscopy, weight loss, improvement in diet and key health statistics.
I don't get too high or too low in most circumstances. While I am realistic in my expectations I am also very positive in outlook and share my positive approach to others on their journey towards donation. |

I had anticipated from my youth that in some point and time my father would need a kidney transplant due to his diabetes. I believe that having nearly 25 years to prepare for this event mentally made it so simple when the time came. I realize that others do not have such time to prepare themselves and the pressure to choose in a short time frame can create a lot of questions and fears. I believe that I would be able to ease some of those fears in others simply through discussions of my own experience. I had wonderful Doctors who put me at ease from the first moment. My reasons to be a living buddy, I can inform them of the prior tests they may have, The test they will have after surgery up to two years Later. I will remind them of why a donor donates. I can encourage someone as a living buddy especially after surgery when they may feel a sudden sadness or questions. Remind them of the importance of taking care of the kidney left behind. I watched my husband receive a kidney from his best friend. I was there every step of the way, from finding out he had PKD to recovering from the transplant to maintaining a healthy life style. I also then after my husband was recovered donated a kidney to his other friend. It was very helpful to have watched someone go through it first and then do it again. I have the time to help someone who has questions and doubts. And if I could I would do it again! |

I had been rejected by one program because of my hypertension but had also applied to Johns Hopkins which does additional screening of hypertensive candidate donors and I was accepted. I know what is it like to have family and friends worry about me doing this; I know what it is like to think through the risks and the reasons to donate. I can and will control my hypertension carefully. I am very glad I donated my kidney. I am a distance runner (trail marathons) and hope to get back to running soon (have to wait 6 weeks from surgery). |

Course I can only speak from my experience as I'm sure things vary from person to person. I am not affiliated with any hospital or health system and do not stand to personally benefit from the decision of a potential living donor. |

I struggled with pain and depression afterwards. It felt like there would be no light at the end of the tunnel but there was. I can share my experience and that things do improve and that they are not alone. It's hard to share what you are going through with friends and family that haven't gone through it or was not supportive of the decision to do it in the first place. I have also done a lot of reading recently and see all the changes that have happened, so I feel up on polices, etc. (for example the requirement to collect data for 2 years and report to UNOS; knowing there is now an organization that might be able to help donors with some non-medical finances relating to the surgery, etc). |

I was also trained to participate as a donor mentor with a research program that evaluated the results of using donor mentors on the overall quality of experience by donors and potential donors. That man in Chicago was the same man I donated my kidney to just last month (May 2012). I have seen all sides of donation/loss and have a unique perspective on the process. I had 2 years to research and decide if this was the right decision for me. I had a great support with friends, family and hospital staff and am so thankful for that. I would be more than willing to share my story with someone else who is contemplating donation or may be in the research phase. I am not an expert in any of it, but any way I can advocate for organ donation or even just be a resource I would be honored. |

I was very athletic at the time. I worked out with weights, ran races, and played soccer. I also had severe osteoarthritis in my knee. So I could no longer take ibuprofen. Since then, I returned to soccer , working out and races. I have had knee replacement and several broken bones. I teach school and live a normal life. I've been asked by anyone I have talked to- can I drink alcohol. The answer is yes in moderation. It isn't recommended but one drink every couple of months was fine per my doctor. I drink a lot of water daily. (60oz) I have the same energy. I was back to work in 2 weeks with no heavy lifting. I was playing soccer in 12 weeks.
When I get sick or take any meds- I double check with doct and pharmacist to make sure it won't hurt my one kidney. It was totally worth it then and still worth it 13 years later. |

Family (Adult) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: Baylor in Dallas TX Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: Hello, I donated my kidney when I was 19. I started the process at 18 years old. My grandpa received a kidney when I was a child and it changed my perspective on life forever. When I donated, I was not a direct match so I did research and we got on a chain. I have a lot of information on donors as well as families recipients. I've been on both sides of it. |

Location: Houston, Texas Donation Date: May 13, 2015 Donated To: Son (Child) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: Methodist Hospital Houston, Tx Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I was initially rejected by one hospital as a donor for my son due to 5 incidents of kidney stones as well as having some scar tissue in my abdomen from previous surgeries I had when I was very young. Changed hospitals and doctors and convinced another team to re-evaluate me. That team said I would not be accepted by any transplant program in the US with my medical history, but they were able to determine what they believed caused my stones and took they chance. Surgery went fine (I mowed my yard 5 days post transplant) and my son and I are both doing very well 6 years post-transplant. Local news did a TV story on our experience and the hospital still invites me to speak to potential donors and share the story. As far as doctors know, I am the only person to ever be accepted as a living donor after 5 incidents of kidney stones. |

Location: Normal, Illinois Donation Date: 8/10/17 Donated To: Unrelated (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Loyola University Medical Center Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I was a non-directed donor who switched programs during the approval process. After being initially cleared for surgery, the status of my intended recipient changed. After that, I moved to a transplant center closer to my home. Being involved with two programs was unique, and gave me insights into what additional testing might be required if a donor changes programs.
Also, my age at the time of donation was 54. |

I STRONGLY believe in organ donation and would love to help more people through this wonderful gift of life. |

Location: Troy, MO Donation Date: 09/10/2020 Donated To: I donated to my father (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: BJC in St. Louis MO Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Mostly positive Donor Story: When I made the decision to donate to my father, I did not have a relationship with him. I did not meet him until I was 25 and then we didn't talk for many years. I heard from another relative that he needed one. It was a long hard process to decide to donate. I feel like I would make a good living donor buddy to someone who was dealing with a complicated situation. My decision wasn't a "of course I'm donating" situation. I think there are others out there that are in the same situation and would benefit from my journey. |

Location: Trappist, Kentucky Donation Date: January 12, 2005 Donated To: Unrelated (Child) Marital Status: Single Donation Facility: Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital, Nashville, TN Type of Surgery: Open nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: Someone may want to be in contact with me as a a living donor buddy to help them understand the process, answer questions they may not feel comfortable asking anyone else and to understand what the experience can mean on a broader scale as opposed to simply the procedure/follow up medical part of the experience. They may want to know someone who is years past the operation (I am six years past.) It can be a bit scary to go thru the testing and then finally be scheduled for a donation. The nephrologist or administrator can only answer so many questions. I would like to have talked with someone who had been through the experience. It would not have affected my decision but would have given me much greater comfort and peace to know then what I know now. |

Location: Kenosha, Wi Donation Date: 12-27-2017 Donated To: Husband of a coworker (Adult) Marital Status: Married Donation Facility: Froedtert & medical college of Wisconsin Type of Surgery: Laparoscopic nephrectomy Living Donor Training: No Donor Experience Rating: Very positive Donor Story: I donated my kidney to someone I had never met. I did know my recipient's wife. We are coworkers at a school. One of the reasons I decided to donate was because about 4 years ago a family friend received a kidney from a living donor. That put the idea in my head. When I saw on Facebook that my coworker's husband was in need of a kidney and he is the same blood type as me it did not take me long to decide to donate. I didn't have any issues with the testing except the doctors wanted me to lose 10 lbs. Both our surgeries went well and our recoveries are going well also. If you have any questions or concerns with anything about the whole kidney donation please ask away. |
